Neuro-Wisdom

 

I was recently reading that about 70% of adults have some form of ADD.  I would count myself in that group and ironically, I’m a teacher of kids with ADD and ADHD.

This may explain why we forget where we put our keys, whether we’ve even brushed our teeth or taken medication. Scientific research tells us that we can only hold 4 chunks of information in our working memory for a brief period of time.  A chunk could even be one word. So, think about losing your keys because you are multi-tasking in the morning and trying to get your household in order before the day begins.  We have the illusion that we are conscious of hundreds of things at one time: colors, things moving around us, awareness of what we are striving to achieve are all examples.

However, in actuality we are only aware of a tiny bit of info at a time and as you’ll probably agree, it’s almost impossible to remember any sentence that has seven or more words.

There’s always an upside to everything and in this situation it is that we do have a benefit to our abbreviated memory.  We just can’t focus on a positive and negative experience simultaneously. The sensation of pain, whether emotional or physical will always diminish when we think of something pleasurable. Try it if you don’t believe me. And, teach your children to do this simple technique.

According to author and neuro-scientist, Mark Waldman, in his e-book, Neuro-Wisdom, “The brain has preferences to embed negative emotions because the organism needs to respond to future threats faster than our conscious mind can respond.”  He explains, “When a real emergency takes place like someone driving their car into your lane, the consciousness in your frontal lobe is turned down so that your instinctual reactions can take evasive action.”

The more you think about the possibility that something awful may happen, the more your brain releases the stress chemicals to prepare the body for the “fight or flight” response.

Building optimism and a way to deal with negative thoughts and stress involves a ratio according to Dr. Waldman.  It was determined in an independent study done by Fredrickson, Gottman and Losada that when the number of positive and negative ratios is  is 5:1,  that is, 5 positive thoughts/experiences vs. 1 negative one, we have much more peace of mind and self-satisfaction. This ratio will avoid the brain’s propensity to turn negative experiences into memories which then engender beliefs that we act upon.

If the Genie Could Grant Your Wish

I’m reminded about how parental fears and concerns are inadvertently passed on to their kids. I had my class write essays on the theme of what they would change about their lives if they were granted a wish from a genie. The children I work with are anywhere from 12-14, and this happened to be a class of low readers. To my surprise, about 1/3 of the class wrote about their fears for their family and how their parents were having financial struggles or health issues. They wanted to be of help, but didn’t know how. Fear, worry, and anxiety naturally come up for many of us. It’s part of life. It’s hard to contain, and it’s also hard to keep the kids from picking it up by osmosis. We live in a complex world where all our buttons can be pushed, and it is very important to remind ourselves that the wolf is not at the door.

What I’m suggesting is that we try to deconstruct our mindset by using visualizations, affirmations, and some focused attention on what we do want to create. I have given a technique a couple of time called “The Flip Switch”, suggested by hypnotist and author, Dr. Robert Anthony. This is about replacing any negative thought you have (when you realize it), and replacing it with a positive thought and holding the thought for between 20-30 seconds. This allows for new neural pathways in the brain to develop, as well as raising your frequency to accommodate more positive experiences. When you’re calmer and when you can view the landscape of your thoughts under a looking glass, you can change the outcome of most situations. Once again, use meditation, use breathing, take some quiet time for yourself, watch a funny movie, and use the Flip Switch technique. Certainly, your child will benefit as well as you.

Subconscious Programs You Share With Your Children

Our parents play a huge role in how we perceive the world and how we parent our own children. We learn to perceive the environment as our parents do and pick up signals from them.

These perceptions are stored on a cellular level. It is said by the Jesuit order that a child is totally formed in thought and belief by the age of seven.

Here are some examples of programs that may have been installed in the software of your brain, and which you are unknowingly passing on to your children.

* Life is a struggle with very few positive moments

* I’ll never amount to anything

* The rich get richer and the poor get poorer

* I have to be on my vigil all the time and it’s exhausting

* This just isn’t the right time for me to start making changes

* I need a lot of luck to get what I want

If we don’t consciously get rid of limiting beliefs, it creates an inner pressure. How can we make the most evolved choices when our thinking is distorted by the beliefs ingrained since childhood?

These beliefs are the information packet we are holding in our subconscious and which we unwittingly pass along to our children.

A toolbox is necessary for us to dig deeper and prevent the programs from running us. A while back I mentioned the Flip Switch Technique I learned from Dr. Robert Anthony, author and hypnotist.

The flip switch is easy to learn. Every time you have a negative thought, and we all have plenty during the course of the day, flip the thought to something positive and dwell on the positive thought for 15 seconds. This is because in 15 seconds new neural pathways are forged in the brain, and you will condition your brain to think positively, attracting or magnetizing more positive situations into your life.

The more clearly you envision a positive situation, putting the emotion behind it, the more advancement you will make in what’s called brain plasticity. You are expunging the negative programming, and replacing it with a positive program. You can even do it when you’re stopped at a traffic light. It’s so easy and so effective.

The Flip Switch Technique for Parents

How can you change the way you feel in a matter of seconds?  And, how can you teach your child an easy to learn technique which will establish new neural pathways in the brain so fear, trauma, and anger are diminished exponentially.  There is a remarkable effective technique taught by Dr. Robert Anthony, whose audio program is available through The Secret of Deliberate Creation.  You can also purchase his book entitled Beyond Positive Thinking, on Amazon.

The technique Dr. Anthony teaches, is called the “Flip Switch”, and I highly recommend you give it a try.  Here is an explanation, and how it is put into practice by using Flip Switch action which takes you from a low energy state, to a higher one.  It’s about consciously finding ways to change or “Flip Switch” your vibrational energy at the very moment you are feeling any negative thoughts or emotions.

Any negative vibration or frequency brings back more of the same, but multiplied.  On the other hand, anything which causes you to feel even a little bit better than you did a moment before, will cancel out that negative frequency.

If you don’t do something about changing negative energy at least sometime during the day, it’s going to pile up and the results won’t be pleasant.  The moment something negative crosses your path, ask yourself, “Is this feeling bad going to make the situation any better?  Is there even one benefit here if I feel bad?”

By being conscious of  the moment, and asking in the moment, you’ll discover that feeling bad only plummets you into more anxiety, despair, and stress.  You always have a choice.  You can Flip Switch to something else which will make you feel better in the moment.  So in those moments, as soon as you realize you are having negative thoughts, reach for the thought that feels best.  Don’t wait!  Find something to think about which makes you feel good right then and there.

Say the Magic Words

“I choose to feel good now!”  Flip Switch from negative thoughts, to a vibrational state that makes you feel better.  Flip Switching is simply looking for ways to feel better in the moment, no matter what’s happening around you.  It will take a bit of attention every day, but it will change your entrenched habits.  In any moment, regardless of how you feel, start to train yourself to reach for the thought that feels best in that moment.  Then say the Magic Words, “I choose to feel good now!”  You’ll experience a shift in emotional state.  This newly activated thought will change your life – one moment at a time.

From now on, any stress you experience is there to alert you to say the six magic words, “I choose to feel  good now!”  You then immediately diffuse the stress.  Do it in the moment, and the results will be cumulative.  Try Flip Switching for at least 15 seconds.  Holding a positive thought or feeling for 15 seconds can completely eliminate a negative thought.  Just recreate that feeling for 15 seconds.

Another way is to think of something you’re grateful for.  You can’t appreciate something, and be unhappy at the same time.  The more you appreciate something, the more of what you appreciate will come into your life.  Flood your mind with appreciation or gratitude, and focus on it for 15 seconds.  Create a state of positive emotion in the moment, because that’s what activates the positive energetic vibration which attracts what you experience in your life.  You are never more clear about what you want, than when you are experiencing what you don’t want!

Say, now I’m going to stop worrying and refocus my thoughts, and Flip Switch.  “I choose to feel good now!”  Then turn your attention away from that which you DON’T want, to what you DO want.  This will stop negative attraction to positive attraction.  This positive self correction in the moment, will put you in a position to receive the answers you need with greater clarity.  “Like attracts like” means what you “flow out” will find its vibrational match, and magnetize it to you, bringing you back someone or something with the feeling you flowed out.  It will bring it back, multiplied and stronger.

Before you teach it to your child, try it out yourself.  When you start seeing the benefits in your own life, you’ll be ready to mentor your child.
